This is the Benito Juarez Monument in
Mexico
City's Alameda Park. Juarez became Mexico's
first president after the French were driven out.
He is viewed as the
"Abraham Lincoln" of
Mexico because he freed the "campesinos"
from serfdom to the "hacendados."
The campesinos were
the farm workers who
couldn't own their own land and were virtual
slaves to the hacendados (rich landowners).
